“If Not Now” by Carrie Newcomer is one of my favorite songs. Throughout the song, this phrase repeats: if not now, tell me when. Many of us have the problem of procrastinating and not doing what is good for us. Sometimes we need a gentle reminder to get started and take a step in the right direction.
Excuses, excuses, excuses…
When people find out I am a Yoga Teacher, they somehow feel guilty and then share with me the reasons why they don’t do Yoga. Or at least they tell me why they’re not doing it at the moment. This is what I hear most often:
- I’ll do Yoga when I feel better
- I’ll come back to Yoga when my life slows down
- I can’t do Yoga because I’m not flexible; I can’t touch my toes!
- Yoga won’t help me because I have chronic _________ (fill in the blank)
Yoga can be your Medicine
What most people forget is that Yoga is a Healing Modality. What does that mean? It means Yoga is a remedy. When you are sick, you take medicine to get better, right? Sometimes, Yoga can be the medicine you need. Yoga can help you breathe through pain and give you calm in stressful times. It can get you moving to bring circulation and healing to stiff joints. Yoga can also improve your strength, balance and coordination. But, most importantly, if you have a chronic condition, it can help you bear the weight of that heavy load. Remember, just a few Yoga stretches and some deep breathing every day can improve your health… just like your daily vitamins!
